Google Business Profile fixes for Gemini and AI Overviews

By Dallas Mayne, Founder · Published · Last reviewed · 5 min read

Short answer

Google says you don't need anything special to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Verify your Business Profile, fill it in completely, keep it current, and keep earning reviews.

What Google says about AI Overviews

Google's guidance for site owners says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema.org markup or AI text files are needed. Your pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in regular Search.

Among its best practices, Google lists making sure your Business Profile information is up to date. That's the part most local trades can fix today.

Business Profile checklist (from Google's local ranking help)

  • Verify your business. Google says this makes it more likely to show up in results.
  • Fill in everything: address or service area, phone, website, hours (including holiday hours), and your main category.
  • Keep it accurate. Google says businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up, and inaccurate info can keep you out of relevant searches.
  • Add real photos of your work and your team.
  • Reply to reviews. Google says replies show you value customer feedback.

Reviews and prominence

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence includes how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and more reviews and positive ratings can help. Google also says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

About Gemini

Google-Extended is a robots.txt setting that controls whether content Google crawls from your site can be used to train Gemini models and to ground answers in Gemini Apps. Google says it doesn't affect whether your site is included in Google Search or how it ranks. Blocking it is a choice about AI training, not a Search fix.

Common questions

Do I need special markup for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there's no special schema.org structured data you need to add and no AI text files are required. Normal SEO basics apply.
Will blocking Google-Extended hurt my Google ranking?
Google says Google-Extended doesn't affect inclusion in Google Search and isn't used as a ranking signal.
What's the single most useful fix?
For most trades: verify the Business Profile and make sure the category, service area, hours and phone number are complete and correct.
